TEACHER WHO?

Hello!

My name is Jazreel and I have been teaching music in Singapore since 2017.

When I was young (I still am), I never really thought teaching music would be a career for me. The piano lessons I had were dry and mundane. There was almost never opportunities to explore other genres of music. It was classical pieces one after another, with exam pieces and scales year after year.

After graduating, I was looking for a business/marketing job and happen to chance upon an opportunity in a Music School. With my musical background, the school offered me a position to do marketing, administration, operations and teaching.

So I was teaching the way I was taught. Followed the syllabus, drilling students with scales and memorized exam pieces. Lessons were going okay, but there wasn't any fun factor for both the student and myself.

As time passes, I realized how much was missing from my music lessons. Pop songs, improvisation, simple jazz riffs and groovy tunes that are such fun to play with were non-existent. I decided that the next generation shouldn't go through what I had gone through.

I started researching, questioning the syllabus, and explored the different methods of teaching. I found ways to include pop chords, stories, challenges, games, and other fun factors into my lesson.

Slowly but surely, things started to change. Lessons got more engaging, even for myself. I feel so much more connected to my students. The usual silent, stern lessons are now replaced with giggles and laughter.

But, my lessons are still far from perfect.

Well, I never said I was the best. But I don't stop learning. At any opportunity I get, I research, I explore, and I continuously implement new ideas to keep lessons fresh, fun and relatable.

I believe every single lesson should ultimately bring out the curiosity, creativity and smiles of a budding musician.

My students now play a variety of music, ranging from great historical classical pieces, modern pop songs and silly funny tunes they love.

I realized teaching is about all about inspiring students to enjoy music and guide them to build lifelong appreciation for it. I want them to have all the tools to help them go explore this beautiful world of music, not just limited to exam pieces and technical drills. Each student is unique, and each lesson is specifically tailored to suit their needs (and wants).

Whatever the goal is, together we will find a way to have a meaningful, exciting and passionate journey to achieve this dream.
